Formed Due to the Eruption of Mount Toba
Lake Toba was formed due to a volcanic eruption called Mount Toba. This mountain has been around for hundreds of thousands of years.
The first volcanic eruption occurred 800,000 years ago. This eruption produced a caldera on the south side of the mountain which includes the Parapat and Porsea areas, North Sumatra.
The second eruption has a small force, occurred 500,000 years ago and formed a caldera on the north side, namely in the Silalahi and Haranggaol areas.
Meanwhile, the third eruption produced a caldera which became Lake Toba with the formation of Samosir Island in the middle. This incident occurred at 74,000 ago.

In the past, when this mountain erupted, the explosion was so powerful that it caused the temperature of the entire ocean to drop to 5 degrees Celsius.

On Samosir Island, there are two small lakes that are used as tourist attractions, namely Lake Sidihoni and Lake Aek Natonang. These two lakes have earned the nickname "lakes above the lake".
